Personality: One Rukia's defining attributes is her pride. She has a very strong sense of honor and duty, almost to the point of becoming obsessed about her actions and how they might be perceived by others. There is an image of grace, beauty and aloofness that she fights to protect in front of anyone from the Soul Society who might judge her, especially her older brother, Kuchiki Byakuya. She endeavors to deserve his family name. Much of her self-consciousness stems from her belief that if she is anything less than perfect, she will not deserve her place among her adoptive family.

Her perfect image has a tendency to shatter under pressure and stress, or with her friends from the Human World, namely Kurosaki Ichigo and Inoue Orihime. However, even upon opening up to these people, she has never been the sort of person to rely on others when in trouble, and it often gets her in to trouble and causes her undue pain. When around Ichigo’s classmates in what they would call the “real” world, she has shown a capacity to be a vivacious and bright young woman.

Because of the importance of her image, Rukia has trouble opening up to others about her problems, to the point of self-destruction. Rukia considers feelings to result from a lack of discipline and control, rather than being a natural piece of life. She doesn't believe in sharing her problems with others, and because of this view, she comes off as cold and aloof. Other than Abarai Renji, who she has known since her childhood in the Rukongai, she does not open her heart to anyone (and even rarely to him) and has trouble making friends and connecting with others on a deeper level as a result.

Rukia is an actress at heart and has few qualms about using her skill to manipulate those around her, though her reasons are sound and her moral compass points due North. This tendency to act leads to different personalities such as the one she presents at Ichigo's school and the one that she shows Ichigo when they are at home or on a mission. Her multiple personalities make it difficult for others to break through her shell, or to feel as though they really know her.

Due to her relationship with Kurosaki Ichigo, it can be argued that the Rukia presented today is very different from how she has acted in the past. Despite her unwillingness to adapt and learn, Rukia has discovered feelings to be more socially acceptable outside (and even within, in some cases) the Soul Society. She has also realized her own passionate feelings towards certain events in her past, recognizing what has contributed to make her the person she is today. Rather than believing her epiphanies to make her weaker, Rukia understands herself better and appears more comfortable in her own skin. She also has more tolerance for those who she would have previously considered weak because of their lack of discipline, namely Inoue Orihime.

After Rukia graduated from the Academy and was placed in the 13th Division, she began serving under Ukitake Juushirou. Despite his poor health and delicate body, Rukia came to really admire him as a Captain and as a man. Ukitake's sense of honor and keen moral compass served as a guide for Rukia during troubled times - such as after Kaien's death. Ukitake was also responsible for teaching her an important lesson about life and honor - during Kaien's encounter with the hollow that killed his wife, Rukia wanted to intervene and believes that had she been allowed to do so, he would still be alive. Ukitake-taichou was the one who stopped her, stating that there were some fights a man had to fight for his honor, and some fights that were simply physical. If she intervened, Kaien would never recover from losing the chance to defeat the hollow that murdered his beloved wife. His words showed her that her captain was treating her as he might an equal, rather than a subordinate who he could simply order to stand down. By explaining himself, Ukitake showed Rukia a bit of his heart; Rukia could never take something that serious so lightly. Respecting Ukitake's wisdom and experience in such matters, she held back until the very last moment, when Kaien was possessed and attacked her, regaining his identity long enough to impale himself on her sword. After his death, remembering Ukitake-taichou's words, Rukia could take comfort in knowing that he thought of her as a friend rather than a mindless lackey. Far from considering Ukitake's chronic illness a weakness, she believes that it has lent him incredible wisdom through patience, and strength through quiet endurance.

About the same time as Rukia met Ukitake and graduated from the Academy, she also became acquainted with Shiba Kaien. During her first day with her new squad, she overheard some of the other members talking about her as if she were a spoiled rich noble who was only given the assignment due to her family name. At that moment, she gave up hope that she would ever be treated normally within a division - later, however, when she met Kaien, he scolded her just like he might any other new recruit. The fact that he could speak so easily to her, as if she was just another part of a team regardless of what family she belonged to, won her instant regard. From there, the relationship between them only grew; Kaien began training with Rukia separately, to keep her on her toes, and she valued those training sessions as her one chance to be "normal" and drop the mask she was constantly forced to wear when in the presence of others. While Rukia has never confirmed this, there were speculations that her feelings had turned from admiration to romantic affection - Shiba Kaien, however, was a married man and Rukia would have been too aware of the dishonor it would bring them both to ever act upon her feelings, if they did exist, not to mention she held his wife in high regard as her idol. In death and the manner of his death, Shiba Kaien taught her that some things were worth dying for - fighting to save your honor, for instance. After a hollow murdered his wife, Kaien demanded to be allowed to go after the beast and slay him to defend his wife's honor. Ukitake eventually relented, and he and Rukia accompanied Kaien to confront the hollow. Rukia, desperate to save him when she saw that the battle was going badly, thought to intervene and was only prevented by her Captain's words, allowing Kaien to regain some of his lost honor for himself and his wife, even though it meant losing his life at Rukia's hand.

Her most recent relationships, those formed in Karakura while aiding Ichigo and his friends, are mostly based on keeping people at an arm's length. With Ichigo, Rukia relies on physical interaction (in the form of ... er, generous slaps and physical violence) and bad jokes to keep him from wondering whether or not there is something lurking beneath the surface. That sort of interaction, impossible back home where people expect a certain level of decorum from her, soothes some of the worry she feels about Ichigo realizing exactly how emotionally fragile she can be. She also loses her temper more easily with Ichigo, prone to yell at him for silly, small things; it's her first taste of being on top of the food chain, and she's rather enjoying it. But she's also frightened for Ichigo - if he doesn't pay attention to the little things she tells him, no matter how trivial, he could make one misstep in battle and she would never forgive herself. To hide her worry, she reacts violently and loudly when they are alone and she's dropped her other mask - the mask of a transfer student to Ichigo's school.

Having overcome her feelings of guilt for Kaien Shiba's death and her hand in the event of his death, Rukia is still very fragile emotionally, especially when she feels she is being blamed for the death or hurt of others. She often blames herself for things that are not her fault – especially when Ichigo gets hurt or feels as though he has to take care of her. Once she reaches a certain point, she becomes overly flustered and fails to think logically about any situation at hand.

Abilities}
☽ Kidou: Used for binding, healing and destruction. Through grueling training, Rukia has developed her skills to an above average level, and is able to use high-level Kidou without draining her power. She is remarkably quick at using the spells in rapid succession, and her combinations tend to be unique and tailored for her use. She is able to use several high-level Kidou at the same time, however it drains her immensely and should only be used as a last resort.
☽ Expert Swordswoman: Rukia is proficient in the basic levels of Zanjutsu. While she isn't as talented as she is at Kidou (something she will willingly admit when pressed), she is capable of holding her own in battle.
☽ Enhanced Durability: Due to her training as a shinigami, and the very nature of her existence as a spirit, Rukia has an above average amount of stamina, durability and can withstand blows that might kill a human. While capable of sustaining life-threatening wounds, she can often fight through the pain and get herself to safety before succumbing to them.
☽ Enhanced Strength: This is a skill that is often overlooked due to her size- she looks like easy prey. Rukia is able to pick up and throw much stronger opponents, even without the aid of her Zanpakutou. Her actual strength and its limits is unknown, however there is a limit to what her body can withstand. She is also capable of hand-to-hand combat when all else fails.
☽ Shunpou Expert: A technique of fast stepping. Rukia is capable of maintaining high speed movements of extended periods of time. Her size makes her faster than others with this same skill, because there is less of her to move.
☽ Zanpakutou: Rukia has many abilities that are tied to her sword, Sode no Shirayuki. The sword appears to be an ordinary katana with an inwardly curved blade. After giving her shikai command, the hild and blade turn completely white, and a ribbon (also white) appears attached to the pommel. Her shikai special abilities include multiple “dances”. Rukia has not yet achieved Bankai at her point in canon.

• Some no mai, Tsukishiro. A circle of ice appears below the victim and freezes them.

• Tsugi no mai, Hakuren. Rukia controls a massive wave of ice particles that speed towards the victim, encasing the victim in solid ice.

• San no mai, Shirafune. The ability to reforge her Zanpakutou with ice if it is broken, and piercing all objects in her swords path.
•
Juhaku. Ice freezes the target from the ground up, turning them into ice.

Baggage}
Her zanpakutou, Sode no Shirayuki, which generally takes the form of a katana. A basic, standard-issue pair of shinigami robes, without any distinctions to set her apart from any other shinigami.
